Goldthwaite TX, population 1,802, was established with the coming of the Gulf, Colorado and Santa Fe Railway, in 1885. It was named for Joe G. Goldthwaite, the railroad official who conducted the auction of town lots.  The county was originally Brown county, and when Mills county was formed, Goldthwaite residents traded town lots for assurance that they would be county seat. The jail was built in 1888, and courthouse in 1890.  The jail is now on the National Register of Historic Places. The courthouse burned in 1912 and was replaced with brick. By 1988 Goldthwaite had an economy based in wool, mohair,cattle,sheep,pecans, grains, and the production of farm equipment.
